Yoga Bliss: How to Create a Calming Practice at Home

Yoga is a practice that can bring peace and tranquility to your mind and body. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced yogi, creating a peaceful yoga practice at home can be a great way to enhance your overall well-being. This guide provides you with all the tips and tricks you need to experience yoga bliss and tranquility in the comfort of your own home.

Do less more often

Let your inner overachiever rest. Some yoga is better than none. Fifteen or thirty minutes a few times a week is better than an hour and a half twice a year. Choose an amount of time that can fit into your schedule with ease. Be gentle with yourself, and you are more likely to experience the bliss of yoga regularly. (See also What to do if you’re having a hard time getting to yoga.)

Set a timer

Let a timer or alarm tell you when you are finished. This allows you to put your phone down, and let your mind rest peacefully. This may be hard at first. Do your best to let thoughts come and go. Just watch them. If it’s difficult to stay present for the time you allot, honor your limits. Choose less time.

Start with breath

Notice how you are currently breathing. See where you feel your breath in your body. Is it in your chest? Ribcage? Belly? Back? Mouth or nose? See if you can allow the breath to gently expand your back bottom rib cage with every inhale. Don’t force it. Get curious, and be loving with yourself as you experiment.

Let your body guide

The regular format of most yoga classes has to do with the spine. What is your spine doing in the posture? Arms and legs add variety and challenge to the shapes. A simple, gentle format is side bend one way, side bend the other way, back bend, forward bend, twist. You can do this seated, standing, in a table position, or one time in each position. Feel your body. Let your body guide the shape and depth of each blissful bend. End with meditation

You can sit or lay down and let yourself drop into being. Meditate for a few moments at the end of your practice or allow the bliss of being for most of your allotted time, it’s up to you. Watch your breath, feel the sensations in your body, or simply be still.
